Description

Friedrich Dotzauer learnt to play several instruments during his childhood, but chose the cello as his main instrument because "only the cello evoked the unforgettable soulful alto voice of his dear mother" (Art. "Dotzauer", Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie, 1877). Between 1829 and 1850, the year of his retirement as a court musician in Dresden, he composed and published an extensive oeuvre of etudes for the cello.

Following two volumes of "easier" and "moderately difficult" etudes, British cellist and musicologist George Kennaway has compiled thirty of Dotzauer's more challenging etudes for this third volume, drawing from the well-known "24 Études journalières", Op. 155, the "Exercices", Op. 170 as well as the "Trois Préludes et Fugues", Op. 178.

Building on the techniques of the etudes in the first two volumes, this selection features more extensive chordal and fugal passages, complex string crossings, a variety of keys and registers, as well as rhythmic and metrical challenges. Dotzauer's mastery as a cello virtuoso is particularly evident in these works.
