This unique cycle, based on Czech Psalm texts from the Kralice Bible, was composed in the United States in 1894. Although Dvořák had already set a number of biblical texts to music, his versions for solo voice with piano accompaniment are the first of their kind in his oeuvre. All the songs share a deep empathy with the meaning of the words and a meticulous declamation of the Czech language.

The principal source for this edition is the Simrock first print of 1895, which contains a separate music staff with altered notation for the German and English translations. Retrospectively, Schumann wrote that this new poetic spirit had inspired the composition of lieder to such an extent that it had become the only genre to make significant progress since the time of Beethoven.Indeed these nine songs, which represent the only complete setting of the underlying Heine cycle, came so close to the spirit of the poet that a new epoch of lied composition was founded. From about 1809, a few years after taking up the Post of Konzertmeister in Gotha, he constantly returned to the problem of the song with piano accompaniment (he composed roughly 90 songs in all). It is true that the form of the Lied was not Spohr's principal interest, master of the symphony, opera and chamber music as he was. But the same preference for unusual combinations, the delight in experiment, that is found in such instrumental pieces as the Septet, Octet, Nonet and the Symphony for Two Orchestras, is also discernible in the songs, and repeatedly gives rise to new ventures. of all his songs with obbligato instruments, it is the present set with clarinet, Op. 103, that have succeeded in reclaiming for themselves a place in the repertoire of today.

Contents:

Sei still mein Herz (Carl B. v. Schubert omitted three poems as well as a prologue and epilogue in his setting, thereby overriding the irony and pessimistic ending intended by the poet. Schubert;s composition was published in five books between February and August 1824.

The first lieder in the cycle are happy and composed with a forward momentum, characteristics which are also reflected in the virtuoso piano accompaniment. The second part of the song cycle turns into resignation, melancholy and impotent rage and is similar to Schubert's Winterreise in its longing for death.

This edition replaces the older BA7000.

Composer: Franz Schubert (1797-1828)

Editor: Walther Dürr (1932-2018)

Instrumentation: Piano, Clarinet, High Voice

Work: The Shepherd on the Rock, D 965, Op. posth. 129

Binding:

Work Language: German

ISMN: 9790006472857

Size: 9.1 x 11.8 inches

Pages: 31

Urtext / Critical Edition

Description

This edition comes with a score and a separate clarinet part. Even if he failed to cultivate this genre systematically he nevertheless directed his creative powers toward the lied at all stages of his career. His first effort (now lost) was written at the age of six or seven and he took up the genre again and again, at irregular intervals, down to the final year of his life. None the less, Mozart usually chose to write a lied only when there was a special occasion for doing so. Even the preface to the first complete edition of his lieder, published in 1799 by Breitkopf & Härtel, refers to them as "occasional pieces", as does the Leipzig Allgemeine Musikalische Zeitung in the same year.
